Twenty minutes of blue

The blue hour lasts about twenty minutes in June. Everything else is planning.

Twilight pictures sell buildings because the inside finally shows. The sky drops to the same brightness as the rooms, and the facade becomes a lantern.

Before the hour

Every light switched on an hour early, blinds set by hand, cars moved off the street. The camera is placed and levelled while it is still bright.

During

  • One position, many exposures
  • The sky checked every two minutes
  • No second chance until tomorrow

Most evenings give six to ten finished images. Good evenings give one that ends up on the cover.
